  1. You make an excellent point. “Americans” . . . aka “United Statians” take for granted that America is more than just the United States of America.
Well done my friend. Well done.

  2. He said “Welcome to America” rather than “Welcome to the Americas”.
The United States of America is the largest country population wise in North America and if you say America to most English speakers they take it to mean the USA. If you say “North America” or “South America” they know you mean one of the two continents.

  3. There are a lot of people in the hole world who name US, America…….

  4. We do not all think that only the United States is America. You have to admit though, United Statians sounds really stupid. So we call ourselves Americans because it sounds more pleasing and is easier to say. Some people say welcome to America, but they mean no ill will by it, they just don’t think before they speak. Also, people from most other countries do not call themselves Americans, they call themselves Haitians or Brazilians or Chileans, but their names sound better! haha! I hope you don’t take offense to our whole country because some people are arrogant and some just speak without thinking. Most of us know that American actually encompasses a WHOLE lot more people than our country, the US.

  5. Yes, arent you clever, you must be the first one to figure out that this little conundrum exists. Its because the Dominican Republic is not officially named the Dominican Republic of America. Brazil is not Brazil America. But it IS the United States of America. Its a part of the name of our country. Thats why it is said that way, and to ignore something so obvious is just being obstinant.

Yes, and had he said, “Welcome to the United States,” you could have answered, “Which one? The United States of America or the United States of Mexico? (Los Estatos Unidos de Mexico)”

  7. Many US citizens are actually embarrassed once you explain to them that a person from Mexico, Brazil, or Columbia is just as much an American as they are.
It is just that US citizens have gotten so used to being called Americans that they really do not think about it. No insult is intended.! I am an Immigrant myself ( from germany) and I always thought it was somewhat arrogant when these people referred to themselves as “Americans”. But they are indeed Americans also, so the title is not being misused. As soon as you ask them if people from other countries are also entitled to be called Americans, they will readily agree that they are. While your point is a very valid one, let’s not make more of it than it is. But I agree, it is fun to remind them of the fact that they are not the only Americans.
As a matter of fact, I believe that the more we call each other Americans, the more we will think of ourselves as the members of one region of the world, and that can only help all of us.
    So, VIVA America !!
    Adolph
