One Response to “What Are Benefits When Costa Rica Votes On Us Trade Deal?”

  1. Which trade deal are you talking about?
The big one for Costa Rica seems to be with the EU and their complaint is that the EU is not reducing tariffs quickly enough on such things as bananas.
Could be you’re talking about Columbia?
Both countries would benefit economically from a free trade agreement; Costa Rica more than the U.S. or EU from it’s small size compared those vast economies. What would be a pittance in the US or EU would be of great import to Costa Rica.
Having more markets allows Costa Rica to sell its products more efficiently and attain a better price.
Trade engenders freer governments. Costa Rica’s is already good, but the incentives to maintain a free government are useful.
Good trade agreements usually result in investment in infrastructure and foreign operating officers which can help generate more trade.
Increased trade should also allow more efficiency of scale. In terms of agricultural products, for example, benefits of larger more frequent shipments means more efficient transpot.
